Chestnut mushrooms prefer coller temperatures and are prone to drying out so require more attention to environmental conditions than oyster mushrooms, like the Blue Oyster or Elm Oyster. Chestnut musrooms are velvety with small-to-medium speckled caps, resembling the color of their namesake nut.

Mushrooms release spores when they fully developed. People with allergies or compromised immune systems may want to consider putting blocks outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Spores can sometimes cause respiratory irritation. In rare cases, spores may also cause irritation for some non-allergic or non-immunocompromised people. You can reduce overall spore load significantly by harvesting mushrooms just before they reach maturity.
